Natural Beauty - Mikaela Boecher
They told me not to wear makeup because only then was I pretty
that natural beauty was better than long lashes covered in mascara and the natural redness of your face was more appealing than the smooth even toned skin that only concealer brought I tried that but only when my lashes touched my brow and my skin was smooth and even and my lips were stained with color was when people told me I was beautiful no one ever said anything when I was natural and bare so do you blame me for painting my face each day they paint houses we learn to paint early on in grade school and we are taught that paint makes things anew and beautiful so I paint my house each day and don’t tell me that natural beauty is better when you would never say a white wall is better than a soft mint green or a ferocious red I know I am beautiful without paint too even if you can’t see it My house is full of intricate designs and my wooden beams tell stories only some will see and even fewer will understand I believe I am the most gorgeous in the morning everyone is when your eyes are still light before the day lays it’s burdens underneath your eyes and your lashes are still heavy with last night’s dreams and a light smile dances upon your lips don’t tell me that natural beauty is better because I am gorgeous no matter what even when I am all dressed up in an exquisite gown smothered in paint or when I am bare and all you can see are my scars that trickle down my face and fall upon my collarbone those scars tell a thousand different stories and when you insist natural beauty is better than a painted face and next time you see someone and you see their bare walls covered with searing scars compliment them tell them they are strong and gorgeous and that their sleep laden eyes are a sign of determination and hope for the morrow |
