All my life I've been told to put my best foot forward. To achieve success at whatever cost and strive to be on top. What my parents failed to understand was: I liked being at the bottom. Odd? Maybe so, but it doesn't make me any less special or amazing. Some of the world’s most amazing people are found at the bottom. Most, some would say, aren't even special. That they wasted their lives on being and doing nothing. To those people, I say, they're wrong.
You see, life isn't necessarily about succeeding or trying your hardest to be on top. It's about much more than that. It's about living. It's about experiencing life and pursuing happiness beyond your wildest dreams. It's about watching the sunset and the night sky’s stars dance among the legends of yesterday. It's about telling stories or living your own. It's about fishing, reading, writing, walking, singing, dancing, loving, giving, and living. There is so much to do, to look forward to in life than money and trying to be on top. All my life, I had tried my hardest and pushed to be on top. At one point, I was. But, at the top of the peak, I scanned above and saw the clouds. I saw the sky in its glory, but at that peak I realized, I was alone. I looked down, and I could see the vast horizon. The valleys, the lakes, the forests, and the endless amounts of opportunities for adventure. Then I realized that being on top is great. A blessing. For it is a view very little get to see. But, you are alone. You will have lived and spent your youth dedicated to work that would lead you nowhere but your own desire. I was an introvert and a boy who thought friendship and love was a burden to bear--an obstacle. Little did I know that the very philosophies and morals I was taught to live by didn't make me happy. In fact, they prevented me from being who I am, doing what I love, and being with who I love. That's the thing about love, it doesn't change you. It brings out the best in you, it brings out you. Who you really are. So no, I don't care about being successful and making a lot of money. I don't care about being the most interesting and most amazing person in the world. Because I know I already am, and I know I am loved for who I am right now. My dream of a successful life is a cliche one. But, it's one I hope to achieve. It's a home, a beautiful home with woods surrounding it and a nearby river, roaring and filled with salmon. No sign of civilization, but the nearby farmers market. It is the endless amounts of rain battering the dirt, creating puddles to play in. It is the cloudy days and the stormy nights. It is the sound of children playing pretend in the yard. A story of a brave knight and an ancient dragon. A story, in which, the knight befriends the dragon, and she rides him into the kingdom of hopes and dreams. It is the sound of my fingers tapping away at a typewriter, working on another piece. It's the sound of her singing as she works her magic in the kitchen. It's the smell of breakfast. Ah, fresh pancakes and the savory smell of an omelet on the stove. I want that more than anything in the world because I know I'd be happy. Because I know we'd be happy. That is my idea of a successful life. A life with no worries and no trying. Just a life filled with joy and living. You see, the thing about love is, you don't know when it will come around. When you feel it. You just know when you do, you don't let go. You fight for it, and you hold on for dear life. That's love. Because whoever you may love, they are the most important thing in the world. Your everything, in a world full of everything. I can tell you right now that I feel love. That she is the most interesting and most amazing human being I have ever met. That I would never, in a million years, trade her for anything. Because she makes me happy and she makes me want to keep living. To achieve my dream and succeed. I can genuinely say I love her. That she is the love of my life. The thing about love, it doesn't make you feel you're at the bottom. It makes you feel like you’re on top, but not alone. Now, at the peak, you are standing with the people you love and the people that love you. The best part is that you didn't have to work too hard or try to push and shove to the top. You were already there. You just had to open your eyes and open your heart. That's the thing about love. It helps you find what is truly important in life. It's not how many zeros you have in your bank account or how hard you worked to get the top office of a multimillion dollar company. It's about what you want to do with your life. Who you want to become. But most importantly, I believe, it's about who you choose to share your life with. And I do believe, I am one damn lucky guy to be sharing it with her.
